GHI Workshop: Global Disability, October 23, 2013

“Global Disability” is a discussion of disability-related issues here and abroad, including legislation affecting Canadians and day to day realities faced by persons with disabilities in various settings.

Dr. Wee completed her MD at UBC in 1993, and physiatry training at Queen’s University in 1997.

GHI Workshop: HIV – A Global Perspective, November 13, 2013

This workshop is an exploration of the global HIV pandemic from the perspective of the developing world. We will examine the impact of HIV on sub-saharan Africa, and discuss progress to date in the global “war against HIV”. Emphasis will be placed on practical and ethical considerations in the diagnosis and treatment of HIV when working in a resource-limited setting.

Global Health Initiative: Refugee Health Workshop, October 9, 2013

Through a series of case scenarios, Dr. Maureen Mayhew will be discussing Refugee Health in Canada. Dr. Mayhew is a Clinical Associate Professor at UBC and Johns Hopkins School of Population and Public Health. She has 25 years of experience practicing medicine in a variety of settings including rural and remote, cross cultural, inner city, refugee health, public health and international public health.

Are you interested in becoming involved in a global health project?

The UBC Global Health Initiative is a medical student run organization that hosts a series of educational workshops and several global health projects with faculty support and mentorship.

Students will present brief summaries of the GHI projects and information on how to apply to be on a project team will be provided at this event.

Dr. Karen Joughin was a member of the Queensland Health team sent to Banda Aceh, Indonesia three weeks after the Boxing Day Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004. This experience impressed on her the importance of organized and coordinated disaster relief work.
