St. Clotilde, Peru (Peruvian Amazon)

This elective/placement in Peru is coordinated through the Division of Global Health (Department of Family Practice). The elective is based at the The Centro De Salud of Sta. Clotilde, which has 32 beds and is located on the Napo River in Peru’s Amazon region providing service and community outreach for 13 river communities.   Supervision is provided by St. Clotilde local and visiting medical staff physicians. Ideal for students in their clinical training period (MED 4, Residents).  Basic Spanish is essential and taking some Spanish lessons prior to your elective is strongly suggested. This elective is not open to volunteers or learners with no Spanish language ability.

ZimCan Health Initiative, Zimbabwe

Current elective placements are available in March/April of every year. There are also placements in the fall and the potential for summer placements if there is enough interest. The program is somewhat flexible so please email Dr Ray Markham if you have any questions. The placement is ideal for students in their clinical training period (UBC MED 4, Residents)

Saigon, Vietnam Clinical Elective

Are you interested in gaining additional clinical experience and the opportunity to visit Vietnam before graduating from UBC Medicine? An official agreement has been signed between UBC Medicine and The University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMP) in Saigon Vietnam since 2012 to provide our 4th year Medical Students with the opportunity to gain additional clinical experience (4 to 6 weeks duration) before graduating from UBC Medicine.

Global Health Initiative Projects

The Global Health Initiative (GHI) also offers students the opportunity to participate in several global health projects which are partnered with community organizations and address community priorities.  Current and past projects have been located in:  India, Nepal, Kenya, Uganda, Peru, Taiwan, and Vancouver (Refugee Health Initiative)
