The Global Health Initiative’s exciting workshop on acute disaster relief will be taking place on Tuesday, January 26th, at 7pm. Please be advised that this workshop is mandatory for those going on GHI trips this summer.
Our speaker will be Dr. Karen Joughin, who was a member of the Queensland Health team sent to Banda Aceh, Indonesia, three weeks after the Boxing Day Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004. She will share lessons learned through this experience, with specific focus on providing coordinated disaster relief.
Dr. Joughin interned as a family medicine resident, and then completed the plastic surgery residency training program at Dalhousie University. Her clinical fellowships have focused on microsurgery, peripheral nerve surgery, and hand surgery. She also participates in Australia and New Zealand Burn Association’s global health initiative for the Emergency Management of Severe Burns course in developed and developing nations.
