Primary Care Global Health Journal Club for residents and BC physicians
By vkapoor on January 10, 2013
Jan 31st at 8PM is the first-ever UBC Family Medicine Global Health Journal Club. This is a new online meeting place which is being organized through the UBC Global Health Initiative and the Division of Global Health in the UBC Department of Family Practice. The idea started with rural residents looking for ways to stay involved with a global health community. We hope this will result in residents and physicians from across BC linking together for global health discussion every two months.
The format is online, through an interactive medium called adobe connect, which can be found at:
Instructions to attend the meeting:
- Login as a Guest to Adobe Connect at the above link (mute your speakers)
- Connect via telephone on audiobridge using the dial-in instructions:
Note: You can choose to connect via audiobridge only (step 2), but if you would like to see the speaker log-in to Adobe Connect (step 1)
The first journal club, Jan 31st at 8PM, will be focused on emerging TB diagnostics. A pdf containing both papers is attached.
This Thursday’s inaugural global health journal club discusses the evaluation and implementation of the GeneXpert rapid molecular test for the diagnosis of TB and MDR-TB. Hailed as a game-changer in TB diagnostics, the GeneXpert technology traces its origins to the September 2001 anthrax scare and subsequent rapid tests for anthrax detection in post offices throughout the US. Please look through the attached articles and join us online – the topics are all open to discussion. Discussion questions will include:
1) Is the GeneXpert story a role model for diagnostic test development and global health initiatives?
2) What are considerations in most effectively making use of this test (logistics, cost etc)?
3) Should a test that can diagnose MDR-TB be used in settings without
established MDR-TB treatment programs?
Our expert guest will be Dr. Jan Hajek, Clinical Assistant Professor Infectious Disease, University of British Columbia
