Hi everyone!
Excited to announce that our next workshop is coming up on Tuesday, March 31, 2015. This workshop will focus on Gender-Based Violence and life with MSF. The talk will be taking place at the MSAC at 7pm.
Our speaker will be Sharon Janzen, an RN, who completed her first 6 month mission with MSF/Doctors Without Borders in Somalia. She then returned to the field and spent 3 months in Darfur, Sudan, in a refugee camp. She has also spent some time in Sri Lanka (post tsunami) and Guatemala with other non governmental organizations. She has completed a mission in Liberia (with MSF), with a specific focus on sexual violence and helped to initiate and coordinate a sexual violence response in a trauma-focused project in the Delta of Nigeria where she did two missions there with MSF.
When Sharon is not on missions with MSF she works at the BC CDC in clinical prevention services and as sexual assault nurse examiner for BC Women’s Hospital. Sharon will give an overview of ‘Life with MSF’ while on mission in respect to these different contexts. She will also speak to the ethical challenges which presented when working in the area of sexual violence and in particular under Sharia Islamic Law.
