Dr. Sister Margaret

On March 6, 2013, join us for a fun and interactive session discussing what is needed to set up a successful and sustainable surgical program in developing countries.

Our 3 speakers: Dr. Geoffrey Blair,  Dr. Damian Duffy, and Nathan O’Hara

Dr. Blair is a Pediatric surgeon at BC Children’s Hospital. He has lectured to 2nd years as a clinical professor this year and can be famously quoted as saying “BEWARE THE CHILD WHO VOMITS GREEN”

Damian Duffy is the Executive Director of the Office of Pediatric Surgical Evaluation and Innovation. Having been a team member with the GHI Project in San Isidro, Honduras, Damian sees the tremendous value of service-learning and global health within health care curricula.  He is passionate about access to surgical care for children and their families, whether overseas or within our own province. He will be joining the Pediatric Surgery Camp team in Uganda in March and has been accepted as a Global Impact Volunteer with Unite for Sight in Ghana in December.

Nathan O’Hara is a program coordinator at the Office of Pediatric Surgical Evaluation and Innovation. Nathan has been involved in coordinating UBC’s Ugandan academic collaborations in orthopaedic trauma, clubfoot treatment, plastic surgery, ENT surgery, pediatric general surgery and anesthesia. Prior to working with UBC, Nathan co-founded the Friends of Rusinga Orphans Foundation, a charitable organization created to support female education and food security for orphaned children in Western Kenya.
