The GHI team is excited to announce that our second part of EBOLA SERIES will be taking place next Tuesday, February 17th at 7pm. While talk of Ebola starts to dwindle in the news, the total number of cases currently remains in the thousands, with individuals worldwide continuing to be infected by this aggressive virus.
Extensively-drug resistant TB (XDR-TB) is another highly deadly disease. XDR-TB infects approximately 65,000 people each year and is resistant to the majority of anti-TB drugs. Both Ebola and XDR-TB lack effective, accessible treatments, and there’s currently no vaccine to protect against either of these global health dangers.
Our speaker will be Dr. Jan Hajek, an infectious disease specialist who recently returned from West Africa, working with MSF and the WHO to improve clinical management of patients with Ebola. He is currently based at Vancouver General Hospital, with his research focusing on the impacts of multi-drug resistant TB, both locally and abroad. In the past, he has worked with the BCCDC TB control program and as a medical advisor for Citizenship and Immigration Canada. He also spent a year with MSF developing treatment for MDR-TB in Karakalpakstan.
