An official agreement has been signed between UBC Medicine and The University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMP) in Saigon Vietnam since 2012 to provide our 4th year Medical Students with the opportunity to gain additional clinical experience (4 weeks duration) before graduating from UBC Medicine.
UMP offers a wide range of specialties (from pediatrics to surgery to nutrition to Internal Medicine, etc…) where you will be experiencing a large variety of clinical cases due to the huge number of patients and the strategic locations of the affiliated hospitals in Saigon Vietnam. Under the supervisions of english speaking UMP Clinical Faculty, you will learn and acquire “hands on ” experiences while assisting your Preceptors in treating the patients.
UMP requires a minimum of 2 months advance notice (from the time they receive your application) in order to properly accommodate your requested elective.
For further information, please contact Dr. Hanh Huynh at the above email address or phone number.
Required documents for the application package for UNM Vietnam:
- Your updated CV
- A copy of the passport page with your photograph and passport number. The expiry date must be current for at least 6 months after the expected departure from Vietnam and the photo must be clear and in colour.
- A letter of recommendation from the UBC Faculty of Medicine Undergraduate program and can be provided by your home site electives director administration assistant. In the request, you need to specify that a minimum of 20 shifts will be completed during the elective at a tertiary care hospital in Saigon with at least 1000 beds.
- A covering letter indicating the department/discipline that you would like to undertake an elective with. Infectious disease, Surgery, Radiology are highly recommended electives by previous students. Pediatrics and Internal Medicine are also offered by UMP.
- A list of expected learning objectives. See samples provided by Dr. Huynh below:
There are a limited number of spots available and a lot of work goes into organizing this privileged opportunity. Please apply well in advance if you are considering this placement.
Send your complete application package to Dr. Huynh by November 1st for the following March elective block. All applications are submitted to UMP for consideration and confirmation will occur by January.
Currently, it is estimated that an application fee of $400-500 USD (depending on the department specialty) is required by UMP to help cover the administrative and hospital costs for the elective. The fee can be paid in person at the UMP International Office at your orientation meeting prior to going out to the respective hospitals for your elective.
We look forward to providing you with an excellent learning opportunity in Vietnam.
Best wishes.
