The McLaughlin-Rotman Centre for Global Health in Toronto published a series of papers that together provide a unique perspective on the experience of countries and companies in Sub-Saharan Africa addressing health problems through local innovation. To the best of our knowledge this is the first extensive collection of empirical work on African science-based health innovation. The papers are published in Bio Med Central’s Journal International Health and Human Rights and one paper, Stagnant Health Technologies in Africa, is published in Science. For on-line access to the publications, please visit www.mrcglobal.org/projects/african_innovation.
“These papers offer important lessons that can help to guide Africa and its international partners to complement 20th century policies on access to essential medicines and technology with 21st century approaches that focus on building health innovation systems. Those who take this route will find these papers highly valuable and timely.” – Calestous Juma
