Global Health Initiative Workshop: Aboriginal Health, November 30, 2011

GHI and AHI (Aboriginal Health Initiative) are collaborating on presenting the Aboriginal Health workshop on Wednesday, November 30th. Food will be served at 6:30 PM with the workshop starting at 6:45 PM.  Everyone is welcome, even if you are not participating in a GHI project.

Dr. Behn-Smith will speak about her “Medicine Woman” documentary, what she learned from her life changing trip around the world, and how it has impacted her current medical family practice with Aboriginal patients. Dr. Tu will be speaking on his research and his personal clinical experience working within Infectious Diseases in the Aboriginal population. Please see detailed bios below.

Details:

Dr. Daniele Behn Smith is Eh Cho Dene of the Fort Nelson First Nation and has Metis roots in the Red River Valley. She is the Director of the Aboriginal Residency Training Site in the Department of Family Practice at UBC. Dr. Behn-Smith held the position of Director of Education for the University of Alberta’s Indigenous Health Initiatives Program and is a member of the board for the Indigenous Physicians’ Association of Canada. She previously served as the Director for the Northeast Community Health Clinic training site in Edmonton and is a co-principal investigator with the Alberta Network Environments for Aboriginal Health Research. Previously, she was enjoying the Northern life as a GP in the Yukon. She had the remarkable opportunity to participate in the documentary series Medicine Woman which profiled her travels to Indigenous communities around the globe to learn from traditional healers. As a result, she continues to have a strong interest in Traditional Healing and Integrative Medicine.

Dr. David Tu is a Family Physician and current Clinic Coordinator for the Vancouver Native Health Clinic. Dr. Tu is a recipient of the UBC Community-based Clinical Investigator Fellowship, Co-Program director for the UBC R3 Enhanced Skills Residency Program in International Health, Clinical Assistant Professor in the UBC Department of Family Practice and Clinical Associate at St. Paul’s Hospital’s HIV ward. His research interests include HIV care in conflict affected regions and HIV care for urban Aboriginal People.
