GHI Workshop: Gender-Based Violence, March 19, 2014

The Global Health Initiative (GHI) is pleased to invite you to our next event which will feature 3 great speakers on the topic of “Gender-Based Violence” taking place on Wednesday. March 19, 2014. This night will touch on topics such as: a historical overview of gender-based violence, experiences working overseas in this area, ethics and safety abroad. Don’t miss out!

Dr. Nicole Aube is a psychologist working in Vancouver, BC. She has been on 6 missions with MSF working in clinics with women who have been abused. She will be sharing her experiences with MSF as well as give an historical overview of various forms of rape.

Sharon Janzen, an RN, completed her first 6 month mission with MSF/Doctors Without Borders in Somalia. She then returned to the field and spent 3 months in Darfur, Sudan, in a refugee camp. She has also spent some time in Sri Lanka (post tsunami) and Guatemala with other non governmental organizations. She has completed a mission in Liberia (with MSF), with a specific focus on sexual violence and helped to initiate and coordinate a sexual violence response in a trauma-focused project in the Delta of Nigeria where she did two mission there with MSF. When Sharon is not on missions with MSF she works at the BC CDC in clinical prevention services and as sexual assault nurse examiner for BC Women’s Hospital. Sharon will give an overview of ‘Life with MSF’ while on mission in respect to these different contexts. She will also speak to the ethical challenges which  presented when working in the area of sexual violence and in particular under Sharia Islamic Law.

Galib Bhayani has served with the Delta Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police since 1992. He was seconded to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) as a trainer for the Turkish National Police in Ankara as an instructor on human rights issues, rule of law and democratic policing. Galib then participated in the massive earthquake relief efforts in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan as an aid worker. Galib was posted to the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) in 2007 as a Regional Security Officer for a transitional area. Galib has continued this overseas training and facilitation through the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre and has been a course facilitator for the Sexual Gender Based Violence serial in Nairobi, Kenya and for the United Nations Pre-Deployment Training course in Lilongwe, Malawi. Galib is currently a director of an international NGO entitled, ‘Some Day is Now International’ which provides assistance to South Sudanese women in areas of health education, training and development. He has travelled to over 29 countries through his work as a police officer and a trainer including many areas of Africa. Galib will touch upon areas of security risk management, safety in the field and some focus on safety for female aid workers. The discussions will be interactive, engaging and consist of a power point with photos and videos from the field.
