Faculty Profile – Dr. Maureen Mayhew
With the mention of “Global Health”, many students think of helping under-developed countries, and gaining amazing experiences and insight from the extensive traveling that comes along with global health projects. Dr. Maureen Mayhew exemplifies this model of global health, but also illustrates the sacrifices that one must be willing to make to become a successful health advocate for under-served populations.
CFMS Global Health Advocacy Program: Report from Training Weekend
Recently, as part of my role as UBC’s Global Health Advocate (GHA), I participated in a training weekend in Ottawa, Ontario, along with other medical students from across Canada. We had the opportunity to connect with leaders in the global health field and learn how to improve our advocacy skills, especially surrounding issues of injustice within healthcare. Going into Ottawa, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect; UBC had not previously sent a Global Health Advocacy representative to the training weekend and being a first year medical student, I had minimal knowledge of both the Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS) and its Global Health Advocacy Program (GHAP). Nevertheless, I was excited to connect with other medical students interested in global health and learn skills in advocacy that I could use as a medical student and in my future career as a physician.
Update: Refugee Health Vancouver website
The RHV website launched this summer. The site provides practical resources to support those caring for refugees in Greater Vancouver. It provides an overview of the refugee settlement process, an explanation of medical and drug coverage, translated patient handouts, medical guidelines, a directory of community resources, and information on source countries.
Global Health in Canada: Dr. Mayhew’s Cross Cultural Health Experience
When Canadian students think about “Global Health”, they often imagine health disparities in vulnerable and underserved populations across the globe. Many students feel that in order to capture a taste of global health, they must travel and work abroad. However, Dr. Maureen Mayhew experiences health from an international perspective in Vancouver when she provides care for her refugee patients at Bridge clinic.
GHI Workshop: Refugee and New Immigrant Health
The UBC Global Health Initiative (GHI) presents this year’s first workshop on Refugee and New Immigrant Health on November 17th, 6:30 pm at MSAC. GHI workshops are open to students and faculty from all disciplines. Dr. Martina Scholtens (Bridge Clinic), Dr. Allison Henderson (Family Practice Resident PGY-1, and David Henderson (Kinbrace NGO) present their perspectives on Refugee and New Immigrant Health. The workshop will address the key issues in refugee and new immigrant health and discuss some barriers and challenges. The speakers, all of whom have experience in working with refugees, will share their personal experiences and resources. They will discuss the Canadian policy on refugee intake and various everyday challenges that have an impact on this population’s health (transportation, culture, language, etc). Information will be provided on the types of resources available to you as a health care provider and to your patients in this population.
